Westie ornamentLose weight. Quit smoking. Learn a new language. The list of potential New Year’s resolutions is endless…and sometimes daunting. It goes without saying that if there are improvements to be made in our lives, there are probably ways we can improve the health, comfort, and happiness of our pet’s lives as well.

If you’ve never considered coming up with a few New Year’s resolutions for your four-legged friend, we are here to help you with that! Check out our list of ideas to give your pet a boost in 2016:

Start 2016 Off On The Right Paw

  • Weight Management – Pet obesity is on the rise in the U.S., and it brings with it a variety of health challenges such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and joint issues. Make daily exercise a priority for your pet in any way you can, be it walks, trips to the dog park, feather or laser pointer chase, or even agility training.
  • Dental Care – Good oral hygiene is an essential component of your pet’s overall health, so invest in a toothbrush and pet-friendly toothpaste and make your pet’s oral health a priority if you haven’t already. While you’re at it, call us to schedule an appointment for a professional dental cleaning for your pet.
  • Proper ID – Is your pet wearing tags listing an address or phone number you haven’t had in years? Now is the time to update the contact info on your pet’s ID tags and microchip. If you haven’t had your pet microchipped yet, give us a call with questions or to schedule an appointment.
  • Grooming – Keep your pet looking and feeling his or her best with regular at-home brushing and combing sessions. Besides reducing shedding, fur balls, and allergies, consistent grooming may help you catch any changes to your pet’s skin, eye, and ear health.
  • Helping Hands – Consider giving your pet the gift of a companion by choosing to adopt or foster another dog, cat, or pocket pet from a local shelter. Not only will you be making a difference in the life of a homeless animal, you will be providing your pet with opportunities for play and socialization.
  • Attention – Paying attention to your pet through daily snuggles, activity, grooming, and making (and keeping) wellness appointments is probably the single best way to improve the life of your furry friend!

From all of us at Rocklin Ranch Veterinary Hospital, have a happy and healthy 2016!
